Thinner strings on fretless?

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by BehindTheMoon, Sep 16, 2002.

  1. I'm just wondering about string gauges on fretless. The ones I've played in shops seemed to have had thinner strings and lower action than fretted basses.

Is that an accurate or useful generalisation?

Partially. You can get away with lower action on a fretless but the string size isn't necessarily smaller.

OK, players use to set the action low, but shops don't. If they aren't specialists on bass, then they might.
String gauges are ordinary. (IMO, thick sound nicer:) )
