I have two jobs- I supply sound and lighting, and FOH mixing, and I play bass.
Sometimes the two come together, usually they don't.
My next door neighbour came over and asked if I could sub with his band this Saturday. Sure. Where? His back yard annual BBQ. I love private parties. Ok, money's good, hours are 7-11. Then he asked if I had some p.a. and lighting available. Turns out nothing is booked this weekend, so yes to both. My QSC p.a.- K-12's, K-subs, X-32 board etc. are right in the trailer on my driveway, along with my club lighting-16 pars that run themselves. He booked that. I offered him a good price due to proximity- It's actually closer to unload it from my trailer in my driveway than to drive to his. He offered to help.
Bass rig- It's close, I'll bring the SVT-CL and a 4x10, it hasn't been used much this year. I'll decide what basses, but one will be my recently finished '74 Telecaster.
This will be my first ever gig that P.A., lights, and playing bass and ZERO driving. I can actually cut thru his hedge to my back door, and it's about 75 feet!

They get a volume, early evening, proximity, AND good hang discount.

Exactly- AND he wants to hang by the fire with his buds afterwards, so asked me to leave the P.A. and he'll put it in his garage for pickup the next day!! Bonus, pack my gig bag and leave.

never had a gig where the only transportation needed for the PA was a hand-truck or the wheels on the cabinets.

    Hi Paula :)

The last ten years I played on every BBQ party my neighbour gave. (I play in his daughter 's band)

It' s always better to be the one who makes the noise, than to be the one who can 't sleep! :D

    Have some fun!

Maybe you should drive the trailer around the block first, just for the feel of it?
    Nah.... :D
    Have fun.

Another plus... no crabby neighbor complaining about the "noise".

  16. I used to live a block from a historic house that often had weddings and other celebrations on the grounds surrounding it. A friend who plays Irish fiddle got a gig there and asked me to back her on acoustic guitar. I was glad to. I brought a guitar, a set list, some chord charts and a music stand. One of the easiest and best paying gigs I've ever played.

    Have a great time, Paulabass!

I host an annual Canada Day BBQ party in my backyard and my band plays. Love the no commute thing and the transition from playing to having a few beers is quick and easy. Most fun gig I do by a mile.

  18. Great! I always take those gigs.
There is a great little cafe near my apartment that is only 1 block away and my band plays there once in a while, and I can put everything in my wagon and roll it over.
Those gigs are the most fun for sure!

House party gigs are always the best. Some of my favorite gigs were in basements, backyards, etc. And having this house party gig in a "roll out of bed, roll into work" location is the cherry on top.

    Break a leg!

Sounds like a good deal and a fun time. I'm assuming this thread is essentially an open invitation. If you could just tell us where and what time..

Enjoy your night, have a cold one by the fire for us.
