So I just picked up a time capsule Spector NS2A, case candy hang tags and everything. I love the way it plays but the tone leaves a lot to be desired. I will keep the original pre-amp board and pups cause tt's all original but it is really just a tad to "muddy" for me. P and J config and after days of searching the Eq really don't help. Suggestions? Help? Direction? Experience?
If this bass really is old and all original, I would be hesitant to replace the pickups. I would experiment with strings first to see if I could get what I wanted.
Its an 87, someone played the heck out of it but kept it in a case. I do love it but have put two new sets of strings on it in the last week, through a boogie, a gk, gk cabs, peavey cabs, eq. They are just dark. I could always put it back in if I cant find a better tone. Surely a new set of emg's will have more clarity and harmonics. I don't know, Agullair pre-amp?
I am a fan of the OBP-1 and -3. And EMG's will sound like EMG's regardless of what you put them in. That isn't a bad thing, either.
My buddy changed the preamp in his euro5 from another brand to an obp3 and it made a huge improvement in the sound, not that I thought it needed it. Now I'm likely to swap my Haz copy for an obp3 in my ns2a. Did you make any changes to yrs since the last post?
I have not. I really don't know what to do. Is it a pup issue or preamp issue. There is "that" tone in there. but its very low.
aguliar obp-3 is a bass preamp W/3 band eq w/switchable mid function, I put one in my spector euro w/emg p/j pickups, and it has a killer sound, bright ,edgy and growly like a spector should be. a set of emg or emgx pickups would be a nice upgrade from the Korean emg copys in the ns2a spector is also using aguliar pickups as a stock passive option now
Check the basics like battery and all wiring connection. The output jacks often become loose internally from wire stress. Can't recall if there is a ground wire to the bridge like most passive-pickup instruments but a poor connection can cause output problems.
There is a thread here about trying different Op amp chips in the Korean Haz copy boards like we have in the ns2a's. The chips are cheap, plug in to a socket and do have different sound characteristics.
My guess is its the pickups, Not the pre. I would swap a set of EMG GZR's in it. They will work with the stock pots in the Haz Copy.
