I recently bought a Fostex A-8 reel to reel recorder. I've never used one before and was wondering if any of you could tell me how to attach the tape to the empty reel.

    Thanks guys!

Most R-R's have an "Edit" or "Load" mode which releases the brakes from both hubs. This is usually engaged by pressing the "Stop" button while the machine is already stopped.

Wind the tape through the transport, then hold the tape in the take-up reel while you turn the take-up hub 10+ times. Some machines/reels will hold with as few as two or three, but ten should hold on anything. Press "Stop" again when done.
