I use the thumb, index finger and middle finger in a classical guitar style. Gary Willis primarily picks with the first two fingers while the ring finger "camps out" on the higher strings and is used as needed up there. Gary's system is difficult for me (but I really don't practice it), but it might be just what your looking for. Check out his website and his books for more info on his technique. For my technique, check out the lessons on my site, www.michaeldimin.com and at www.bassically.net as well as my book, "The Chordal Approach"

hope I've been of some help
