Does anyone know of any modern three-stringed bass guitars? All I can find are early double-basses. I'm looking for an electric, but will I have to go custom on this one?

Talkbasser and Extended Ranged Bassist Gregory Bruce Campbell has a 3 stringed Bee Bass... maybe 2 years old.

I'll link it as soon as I find it

Tony Levin had a 3-string MM. Details here

For cheap experimentation you could take the 5-string of your choice (preferably with a skinny neck) and only string it up with 3 strings . . .

The crummy "bass player" from the band "Presidents of the United States of America" (who scored such epic tunes as "lump" and "peaches") used a bass with 2 bass strings... I think they were tuned to an octive. Classy.

  15. "In the mid 18th century most double-basses were made with three strings, a practice that continued until shortly before the end of the 19th century. The three-stringed double-bass had a more powerful sound, a clearer, harder and more assertive timbre."

Quoted from the Vienna symphonic library...

yup! that is Greg's I mentioned ealier

  19. Actually, I seem to recall that his 'bass' is actually a Gibson SG Guitar with two bass strings on it. Calls it a bassitar or something. I don't know about the tunning, tho. Here's a pic:

    PUSAGuitar.

And for the record, I dig PUSA! My brand new cover band just added Peaches to our set list - fun song.
