It definitely is a lot more mellow.

I believe the main thing wrong with the sound of the thumb 5 is the pickup placement just sucks. The thumb 4's sound is far superior, and I bet if you placed a third pickup in about the same place as the 4's neck pickup, it would make worlds of difference. Post more before/after clips after you do that! ;) :D

  5. What pickups and pre amp did you put in there, it sounds so much better, hell, even I like it.

"here it is with a new pair of pickups (Crel) and a new Preamp (E-pro)"

    In the first post.
  7. I think it would sound better with Bartolini hum j's, and an aquilar pre amp:D ;)
  8. i actually much prefer the 'before' clips than the 'after' clips, even though they have a lot of zing on top. they just sound cleaner to me.

I agree. You need the onboards to give you a lot more bass to make up for the lack of that usual neck pickup rumble I recently tried out a bunch of different pickup/preamp combinations on my thumb 5 after the MEC's died. I ended up with an Aguilar OBP-3.
