Hi all I haven't able to use my beloved TI Jazz flats on my VMJ, because I cut a couple of the strings just a little to short for it when I put them on my ABG, my first bass. Now, I'm about to get a Brice HVB-600 shortscale (30.3"). Would it be a good idea to put the TI's on this bass? The TI's go from .100 to .043 in gauge, I think. Can I just use some wire cutters to cut and install the strings like I would on a regular scale? Has anyone put regular scale strings on a short scale, or more specifically, regular scale TI Jazz flats on a 30" scale bass? Thanks
I know that Mike Watt uses full length (34 Inch) scale strings on his EB-3. He cuts them off to fit the bass, which is a short scale (30 Inch) . As to whether the TIs will fit or not, I do not know. I would be concerned if the string itself is wound around the post, which would make it prone to breaking, but since you cannot use them on your other bass anyway, it may be worth a try.
You cut them too short, right? If they won't fit on your short scale, they'll probably end up in the trash anyhow, right? Give it a try. Why not go for it? You have nothing to lose. The only problem you might run into is having lower tension than the usual low tension you experience from TI Jazz Flats. I love my TI's. I have them on all my basses. Putting 34" scale strings on a short scale will reduce the tension. You may or may not like that. Who knows? You might not even be able to tell the difference. Let us know what happens. Peace, Joe
I'm definitely going to try 'em (won't get the new bass until about 2 months though), I guess what I'm really looking for is someone who's actually tried regular scale strings on their short scale. Hopefully the tension won't be too low to where majorbuzzage is in effect. I love TI's too, I just really hope they work on the shortscale so I can put them to more use. Thanks for the replies so far!
I use the regular scale TI Jazz Rounds and Acousticores on 30" basses with no problem. But they're lighter gauge than the Jazz Flats. You might have a bit of trouble getting the jazz flats around the tuning post...I don't know. If nothing else, you can always just get the short scale Jazz Flats. They make them for 32" scale, which should work just fine for any 30" bass
