I used to have a T-40 too but I got rid of it. Too damn heavy.

    ;) :D

My number one these days is a fretless jazz that is around 8.5 pounds but my basses range from 7 pounds, Dingwall ABZ 4, to 10 pounds, Carvin LB76.

  4. OK, I can't disagree with you on that.

My gripe, if you can call it that, is with the folks who quibble over ounces.

Hey, you have a point; I think that setting a specific numeric line is just easy shorthand so we don't even have to think about it.

I've never weighed mine, it never bothered me so I really don't care what they weigh.

My 1970 weighs 9.4 lbs, which is lighter than my 4003, and three of my various Fenders. I think they get a rep for being crazy heavy because they look light. The opposite to the way a 14 lb. road bicycle feels almost lighter than air because your eyes tell you it should be much heavier...

Whoo, ready for some numbers? Here's the basses I've owned and weighed, not all still in my possession, but all weighed with the same digital luggage scale.

    Gibson - SG Bass Faded - 2012 - 6.8 lbs
    Ampeg - Dan Armstrong - 1970 - 9.4 lbs
    Rickenbacker - 4003 - 2009 - 9.5 lbs
    Univox - Professional Bass w/bridge cover - 197x - 8.8 lbs
    Fender - Road Worn Jazz - 2012 - 9.0 lbs
    Epiphone - Jack Casady - 2010 - 8.0 lbs
    Epiphone - Thunderbird Pro IV - 2009 - 8.5 lbs
    Ibanez - AGB140 semi-hollow - 2004 - 8.2 lbs
    Squier - Classic Vibe Precision 50's w/pickup and bridge covers - 2013 - 9.7 lbs
    Squier - Vintage Modified Fretless Precision - 201x - 7.5 lbs
    Fender - American Standard Precision - 2010 - 8.5 lbs
    Fender - Jazz - 1963 - 8.6 lbs
    Fender - Noel Redding Signature Jazz - 1997 - 9.4 lbs
    Fender - Made in Mexico Jazz - 1990 - 9.7 lbs
    Gibson - Flying V bass - 2012 - 7.8 lbs
    Epiphone - EB-3 Negative - 2009 - 8.5 lbs

I also have one Frankenfender that weighs in at 10.3 lbs (Squier VM Jazz maple body with Fender 60th anniversary P neck) and another that hits 9.2 lbs (Fender Nate Mendel P body with a Fender 70's Precision neck). There's also a Goya/Matsumoku neck-through thing that has no model name or number, and no date but weighs 8.5 lbs.

  10. 2002 Fender MIM Deluxe Jazz - fully stock except for Elixir strings, added tug bar and chrome pickup covers w/ Dunlop 2-way strap locks - black body so the wood is unknown - 8lbs, 1 oz w/batteries

2005 Fender MIA Jazz - fully stock with pickup covers and added tug bar - Dunlop 2-way strap locks - 7 lbs, 11 ozs.

1997 Fender MII Squier Precision - added bridge only chrome cover, + Dunlop 2-way strap locks - added tug bar - has stock heavy, although not a high mass bridge, this is an oddball bridge - 8lbs, 0 ozs

5FEB66C (Feb 5th, 1966) Fender Precision Bass, Tobacco burst - stock, stock, stock - added Dunlop 2-way strap locks - not sure of the wood - 8 lbs, 9 ozs.

Peavey Fury P-style bass - Unknown year - 13-ply plywood body, so anybody's guess for the type of wood! w/a roller bridge (stock?), Dunlop 2-way strap locks - defretted - (get this!) 13lbs, 5 ozs.

    2006 Ibanez AEB10-BK acoustic bass, Black, so the wood's a mystery - Dunlop 2-way strap locks - stock, w/batteries weight it 6lbs, 4 ozs.

The Peavey Fury had to be a "Free Rebar Day" at the Peavey factory.

I've been fortunate to get some very lightweight basses in my Fender lineup.

FWIW - most basses that I build come in at very close to 8 lbs almost all the time.

I think 8 lbs is a good place to shoot for in weight, no matter what wood is used as it makes a friendly and less spine-killing bass to play.

    HTH!

    Ric 9.5 Lbs
MIM Fender J bass 10 lbs

Both are great playing and sit comfy on a strap. I use Levy's 4" strap. Best strap ever.

  12. Ibanez SR600, my favorite bass weighs in at 7.5lbs.

    OK, STOP ADDING BASSES NOW.

I'M CATCHING UP AND WILL START A NEW THREAD WITH A LINK TO A GOOGLE DOC WHICH WILL LET EVERYONE ADD THEIR OWN BASSES.

I WILL POST A LINK TO THAT THREAD RIGHT HERE.

NO BASSES POSTED IN THIS THREAD AFTER THIS POST WILL BE ADDED TO THE SPREADSHEET.

I will NOT add those weights to the spreadsheet. You might as well delete your posts. See my post 614 above.

DO NOT POST NEW WEIGHTS IN THIS THREAD. SEE POST 614 ABOVE.
