I vote for "ti·nuh·tuhs". My late father, who was a pathologist, agreed with that. He stated that it's based on the Latin translation and it's actual lineage: how to pronounce tinnitus - Google Search On the other hand I see all these ambulance chasers on TV ads stating it as "ti-nih-tis". It makes me cringe when I hear it pronounced like that.
I've never heard it pronounced the way you suggest. Then again, every audiologist I've been to could be wrong. Shrug. - John
I always thought (logically due to the spelling) that it was tin-eye-tus. I've heard it that way from other people also, including a couple doctors. I've also heard many other pronunciations. But, I have it, so I could be hearing it wrong...….
Ya beat me to it, Biffa! And before anyone gets all "hurt" regarding this lighthearted moment -- nobody with tinnitus is being ridiculed, so just relax. Just a little wit and fresh air into a serious topic, which was actually a common practice human beings performed throughout history until around 10-15 years ago when recreational aggression for nearly every human action under the sun became a fad. Tinnitus sucks. No other way to cut it. I feel for those who are experiencing it. Let's spread the word and get people of all ages to protect their hearing, regardless if it's at band practice, at a concert or around power tools and lawn equipment.
I have it bad. It’s to the point where I need white or other background noise just to sleep. I’m actually on the verge of foregoing ear monitoring all together at this point, which is severely going to limit my enjoyment of playing music at home. The infomercials were right! EDIT: FWIW to share some perspective I’m 38. It might seem like a billion miles away at 19, but for the love of all that’s holy, put some protective crap in/over your ears while they’re still ears and not tater spuds!
Thanks. Mine isn't bad. I only hear it in a silent environment. I've worn earplugs religiously for 25 years or better so it doesn't get worse. Plus I like a fan on me when I sleep and always listen to low volume music also. I'm good at this point.
I too pronounce it tin-EYE-tis, but as I analyze the structure, the pronunciation of tinnitus seems to be more properly to be TINN-ih-tus. I have it, maybe that's why I don't sleep well.
