    I've only been into home recording for a few months now and I'm doing a lot of school work so I haven't had the time to accumulate a lot of stuff. This is what I use right now.

    Bass:
    MIM Jazz -> Boss LM-2B -> Boss GE-7B -> Yorkville MB100

    Guitar:
    MIJ Squier Strat -> Boss LM-2B -> Dunlop Wah -> Marshall BluesBreaker II pedal -> Yorkville MB100
    I have to roll off the lows when I play the guitar through my bass amp but other than that it sounds good.

    Then I run the amp's line out into my SBLive!

    I use Sound Forge for sound editing and Cakewalk Sonar for mixing everything up.

    I also have a MIDI keyboard that I use a lot. I got a bunch of Hammond B3 Sound Fonts from SonicImplants. I love those.

    I use a pair of Grado Labs headphones right now.

    Gear I'm planning on aquiring some time in the next few months:
    FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor (it's supposed to be really nice)
    SABDDI
    Boss DD-3 or DD-5 to use with the guitar.
    Studio Monitors

    Midiman Audiophile and Delta cards are good cards.
    Driver support for Win98, Me, 2k/XP, MacOS, Linux.
    Asio (Cubase), EASI (Logic), GSIF (Gigasampler/studio) support.
    Good ADDA converters, 24bit/96kHz capable.

    STAY AWAY from the SBlive or the new Audigy - they are advertised for recording, but they don't deliver - and the driver support is abysmal.
