Up for sale is a superb jazz bass, rarely seen in the USA. Momose MJB2 Special. This bass was hand built in Japan by Momose. Momose is one of the more renowned and leading high end luthiers/brands in Japan. This is essentially a master built 70s style Jazz bass with excellent components (quartersawn maple neck and quartersawn maple fingerboard, high grade light ash body, custom hand-wound pickups with cloth wiring, etc.). {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} {} The pickups are some of the best I’ve heard in a jazz bass, they sound great to my ear. Bass has a push/pull tone pot for series/parallel which is very cool. The neck and fingerboard wood selection is beautiful. I believe this exact same bass is featured in the video below from Bass Japan Direct. You can hear how great the bass sounds, and he also does a great job describing it and the quality. VIDEO: A bass like this would cost you around $2000-2100+ new from Japan, plus normally $100-200 in shipping and even more on top of that in import fees. While they’re not cheap by any means, these are especially excellent for the money. A very well-kept secret here since there aren’t many in the US. I’ve seen comments comparing Momose instruments to Fender Custom Shop (etc.) quality/build wise. If you do a search it should be easy to find glowing comments about them. Specs (from a past Bass Japan Direct listing of this same bass): “Top of the line classic build from one of Japan's leading luthier, Momose San. This bass features qs maple fretboard, a maple neck, top grade light ash body and custom hand wound pickups It plays like a breeze achieving sub 1mm action if needed. Incredible stuff. Really one of the best basses you could wish for.” Body. Light ash Neck: QS maple on maple Nut. Bone 36mm Scale: 34" Grip. Ultra thin c (20mm deep at 3rd fret and 22mm at 12th) Pickups. Original groove 70s Bridge. Gotoh 203b 19mm pitch. Tuners. Gotoh fb3 Controls. Vol, bal, tone, boost. WEIGHT: ~8lbs 9.8oz (see photo) Bass is in excellent condition, I’m only aware of one small ding (pictured below) and normal scratching on the pickguard. {} I hate to let this bass go, I really like it and IMO it is hard to beat in this price range, but I could use some extra cash for house/car related expenses. I already have another jazz bass from the same factory / parent company in Japan which I’m very attached to, so that’s the only reason this beauty is on the block. Every time I’ve picked it up and played it recently I’ve been asking myself the same thing. Love that quartersawn neck and board, and the pickups are great!
Make me an offer on this beauty. Someone will get a killer bass for the price. If this doesn’t sell in the next couple of weeks I might just find a way to keep it, but I’d like to try to find this one a good home first.
A photo showing concealed fret stems goes a long way illustrating the attention to detail the Deviser folks put into their instruments. I believe this involves an additional maple binding that comes after fret insertion. Always been Yamaha's forte.
I don’t think these particular basses have the concealed stems, but they do have excellent attention to detail all around and (as mentioned in the video above) a ton of attention put into fret ends, rounding, etc. Very comfortable. The folks at Deviser do put a huge amount of care into the instruments they make. Here are a few photos in case it helps: {} {} {} {}
I stand corrected. This might be a custom feature. Pic from a 2013 Deviser calendar that came with a Seventy Seven Hawk jazz ES175 clone i purchased not too long ago. {} Knowing their attention to detail, the MJB-2 Special must be on top of the 70s four string jazz basses available today. At least as good as ESP navigators i would say.
