I see quite a few people have Tom's "Geddy Lee" jazz pickups. Does anyone have his standard wind J's?
I'm having a set of his 60s singles put into my Suhr Classic J this week so we'll see. Keith Horne popped them into one of his basses recently and was elated. The stock Suhr singles are very beautiful but also very bright. I'll be interested to see if the Brantleys offer a bit more variety in the low/low-mid area. Will report back...
In this video, @LowEndLobster uses a Tom Brantley set on his FGN Neo Classic J. Note that this FGN has 60s pickup spacing, despite the 70s styling of the instrument. I LOVE the tone. A lot more defined and punchy than the stock Fender pickups on the MIM Geddy.
Please do report back! I’m looking for the same in a new set of pickups. Seems promising as per LowEndLobster’s demo.
My Pu’s I got from Tom Brantley were made custom. But…I’m pretty sure he will either recommend something for ya or custom make anything you want. He’s very easy to work with. Answers emails promptly, and takes phone calls personally. Recommended. These are the Schecter style PU’s I had made for me.
I think so too! Especially being a (I assume) one-man shop. The only thing better price-wise is the Fender Pure Vintage ‘74 pickups that is going for $109.99 new.
The Brantley's I just had installed in my Suhr are especially made for Dave Thomas's Guitar Repair Shop and is essentially a 60s single but with a power in the low and low-mid ranges to keep up with an active bass. He swapped the stock cap with a ceramic one and finally, the original volumes were replaced with linears so now I can blend the two pups more precisely. So the Suhr went from a stock, bright, full range, medium output with traditional lows bass, to a fatter, higher headroom, hotter output with an undeniable low-mid, authoritive bass - that can keep up with my Sadowskys. Tom calls them "DT-Hot60-JBs". Good stuff!
