I own 3 Tom Owen bows, 2 French and 1 German. Each was appraised a few months ago by Bob Ames in Fort Lee, NJ at $2k. I bow French almost all the time now, and the bow I’m keeping has a thicker stick, which I prefer. FS here is an octagonal stick of what is normal bass bow thickness to me.

There was a purely cosmetic chip that Bob repaired shortly after I got the bow a few years ago. The nature of the repair is such that, although I remember it was near the tip, I’m not sure which side it was on. (If you can tell from the photos, you have better eyes than me.)

About all I can tell you about how it sounds is that I’ve heard it played on an old, very good bass and compared with some $20k+ bows. It doesn’t sound like a $20k bow, but it’s still pretty good, IMHO.

    Please PM if you’re interested.

    Thanks very much.

Hey man, I don't play upright bass but holy cow! I had no idea a single bow could go for $20,000!

I just started a thread called Most Expensive Bow - interested to see what comes up. There's a similar thread about basses (upright) already.

I do, indeed, still have the German bow. It is my only good German bow and I'm happy to keep it, even though I don't play it much. Interestingly - to me, anyway - it has characteristics not in either Tom Owen French bow. It's rather raucous sounding, for lack of a better word.

Thanks Steve. I remember going through the 4 or 5 German bows Tom sent me to try out - they ran the gamut fro raucous to meek. I kept two (raucous and its runner up, which I use regularly). He was quite a fascinating guy. I was lucky to speak with him a few times. Louis
