I remember an interview with him where he said he used to dip his fingers into a jar of Vaseline in the studio to help with his technique.

Good piece on Tommy that includes the Vaseline reference, "Mike Leech said that Tommy also kept a jar of Vaseline on hand, and he would stick his right fingers into it to help facilitate his technique."

I just came across this thread from last month... the one silver lining to come out of this suspect auction is that more people are discovering the superb musical legacy that is Tommy Cogbill. And while, no its not the famous Chips Moman '59 P bass and it seems to have been heavily modified (maybe by Tommy?), it's at least an instrument that the man himself owned and played and will hopefully make some money for his family. Does anyone know where the bass ended up?
