I know some of Carey Nordstrand's basses have this:
a tone knob that remains engaged both in active and in passive mode.
What does it do when running active? I mean - does it control
anything in the active circuitry? Or is it just the same old tone
knob, placed between the preamp and the jack?

  2. Same old tone knob. It's simply a passive treble roll-off, and doesn't affect anything in the active circuitry--but it does sound different and has a much bigger effect on the tone than simply cutting highs at a particular frequency with the active EQ.
