tone question comparing my 2 basses

    well i have 2 basses:
yamaha erb300II (which i think is an older version of the rbx170 or 270, not sure, what exactly is the difference between those 2 ?)

    and a btb1005

on my yamaha i have 1/4 pound duncan pickups

now my question is why does the yamaha sound more "metal" like than the ibanez and is there anyway to make the ibanez sound more "metal" like
also one main thing i noticed in tone is when i slap on the yamaha, the string touching the frets "clang" sounds more than on the ibanez which has a softer "clang"

so in brief: what makes the tone differ so much between a high end bass and a low end (wood and pickup wise)
and how can the ibanez get a more metal tone

PS: my main tuning is 1 step down, on standard duning the ibanez sounds nicer on slap, would the action or any of that have any effect? i have low action on both
