tone wise

  1. Will a heavy gauge string sound deeper than a lighter gauge? Does the 45 in the gauge # system refer to the E or G? Thanks.
     
  2. The .45 is the G. As far as a heavier guage string sounding lower, I'm not really sure. I think it'll sound "fuller".

    Some people would say yes, to the first question, though you can get a pretty 'deep' tone by tweaking your amp controls, getting the right sort of speaker setup, etc.

    And the 45 (or .045) would be for the high string - the G - as in .045-.128 or something.
