  1. I keep reading on Talkbass where someone mention’s how people like their “tone”. Is “tone” real or just a wank word?

Every bass/player/rig has a tone. It's an umbrella word used to describe "your sound".

    Tone is in your fingers.
    Your fingers are real.
Therefore (by the transitive property) tone is real.

Many a bass player who have come before ye have spent their entire life and put themselves into massive debt chasing the tone they have in their head and trying to physically achieve it.
