Any ideas how to get this tone?
sounds like a generic kinda tone; roundwound strings with the highs rolled off; not a very deep, round, full tone; kind of a safe, plastic sound that you could get with any number of basses and amps.
OK, it's Will Lee with the 2nd version of "The World's Most Dangerous Band" (Paul Schaffer, Sid McGuinness, and Antoine Figg). And Will's said that what we hear on TV is all direct, so it's not an amp that's giving him that sound. It's mostly Will's ears that direct him to that sound, and a good mix (for example, none of the guitars are cluttering up his sonic space, and the kick drum isn't hogging all the low end). Roundwounds, a Jazz bass, and EQ to nail the sound. Attack with the hands controls most of it after that.
Agreed with John...those magic hands. Great band, Great Will. I saw him pedal-stomping a bit during the vid, but couldn't make out much of anything afterward.
Thanks guys, Yeah I will be covring the song with a couple friends, and I am a perfectionist so...lol Any ideas on eq for it?
Without knowing the bass, amp, speaker, or room, there's no way to say how to EQ it. EQ by definition is to equalize to the room. If you're using a mid-range heavy cabinet like an Eden D410XLT and a highly colored head like an Ampeg, the control settings would be a LOT different than if you're using a relatively flat cabinet and a more uncolored head.
Just don't be afraid of the mids, but the most important aspect is don't worry too much about your individual tone. Focus on how your tone fits into the rest of the band. If the guitars go for a big low end, you're not going to be able to use the same sound Will's got in this clip.
How to get Will Lee's tone....answer that question, become a millionaire.
