It is our great pleasure to add the world-renowned bassist and educator Tony Grey to the TalkBass "Ask a Pro" roster! Find out more about Tony at his website, http://tonygrey.com and his video academy: http://tonygreybassacademy.com

Besides being among the greatest musicians ever known, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Hiromi, John McLaughlin, Branford Marsalis, Zakir Hussain, Mike Stern, Gary Husband, Simon Philips, Wayne Krantz and Steve Lukather all have something else in common. At one time or another, these legendary artists have counted on the supportive, melodic and propulsive bass playing of the amazing Tony Grey. Artists of such stature, virtuosity and high standards do not trust just anybody to hold down the foundations of their music. They seek out the best for live performances and recordings. Time and time again that is turning out to be Tony Grey.

While at Berklee, Grey had his first taste of success as member of the pop band Bliss. The group toured extensively, appeared on MTV and had three tunes reach the pop charts. However, Grey thought further education was the key to becoming the all-around musician he wanted to be. In that belief, he left Bliss to complete his degree at Berklee. Grey was given the esteemed Outstanding Performer Award while at the school. Upon graduation, he immediately began leading clinics and master classes at Berklee and elsewhere.

Tony Grey is more than just one of the leaders of the modern bass movement. He is more than his impressive technique and the stirring emotions he communicates with it. His several solo projects, ( Moving, Chasing Shadows and Unknown Angels) have also proven he is an arranger and composer of the highest order. If you are unaware (as Grey is) of any limitations, you have no boundaries.

Tony Grey’s determination to overcome adversity, his love of music, his inexorable artistic growth and his belief in music education, have all coalesced into the most important project in the bassist’s career, the online Tony Grey Bass Academy. Grey is changing the paradigm of learning to play bass guitar. His distinct vision, born of his archived and ongoing experiences, is put forth through a varied and easy to use program of instructional books, CDs, live lessons and other unique presentations. His goal is to find and nurture each student’s wholly individual voice. The Tony Grey Bass Academy will create the next line of standout bassists fully prepared to hold down the bottom-end while carving out full identities of their own.
