Top 6 Dirt Pedals on 7/31/2009

In no particular order:
3xFX Fatman- only one I own, but I love it
Catalinbread SFT- Getting one for my birthday (a week from today). very excited
Earthbound Supercollider- one of the greatest muff clones I've ever heard.
Wounded Paw Battering Ram
Devi Ever Soda Meiser
Catalinbread SCOD- never heard one on bass, or even heard of one being used on bass, but from the guitar clips I think it would be great for AWESOME SUPER BR00TALZ METAL solos. After I get my SFT, I might try to convince my band's guitarist to get one so I can try it out. He'll probably like it though. Hey has anyone here used one of these on bass?

Re: Catalinbread SFT...

Is the SFT causing people to revise their top six lists? I'm ready to buy a new all purpose OD/distort box and would get a blueberry if I could, but those seem to have become unobtainable/fordable, so I'm thinking the SFT may be a good alternative.

The DDyna Thinman is the OD I use most now, so even though it's a different flavor of OD, it knocks the Disnortion off my previous list. On reflection, the general flavor of the Disnortion was not that different overall from the Holy Fire, so they didn't both need to be on the list anyway.

Even though I currently have (and use) a Turbo Rat and Holy Fire I don't think they'd crack my top 6 as I bought them for band specific tones. I do dig them both a lot though. Finally trying a B:Assmaster I can see why everyone digs them. Great tone that both holds the low end AND cuts through. Not exactly my tone but it is great. I'd have to A/B but it would likely kick the TZ-2 off my list. I'm hoping I dig the Pork Loin too. All in all, either 1 or no changes to my list from a few months ago.

Just based on clips of the SFT, I think the Holy Fire is a pretty different sounding overdrive. And both are fairly different from the Blueberry. The Holy Fire can cop Blueberry "like" tones at low gain and with the tone past noon on the BJE (and maybe the SFT can too) but I know the HF can't match the high gain, low tone sounds of the BBBOD and I haven't heard a clip of the Catalinbread that came close either.

The Box of Metal is my new number one, as it gives me pretty much everything I want out of a dirt pedal in my set-up. I would actually bump the Blowtorch off the list, as it is somewhat similar to the Assmaster in application, but overall much less compelling.

Bit of a derail here, and normally, I'd just send a PM, but others may find this of interest. BigO, since you've owned both of them, if you put the XXLB and Landmine head-to-head against each other, for a very high-gain crushing metal distortion, who's the winner? Those are the two I've narrowed it down to, and the two most suggested for that tone. But I've never heard an actual A/B comparison of them.

I never had them at the same time to directly A/B them but here's my best attempt. I should also note that I currently use the Turbo Rat for this type of "crunchy" distortion.

The XXLB is "fizzier". responds better to dynamics, is more "wide open" sounding, has a larger range of dirt/gain (though that's not saying much) and has more volume on tap if needed.

The Landmine is a bit crunchier, has a more compressed sound, and has no control of gain but much more EQ control (the XXLB just has a tone knob).

If you are a pick player I like the XXLB better. For fingerstyle I like the Landmine better. The XXLB is good for fingerstyle but only if you play hard or use a range of dynamics where you really dig in hard when you want dirt. What I mean is that I really dislike the sound of the XXLB when played fingerstyle with soft to medium plucking. It just sounds too "buzzy" to me. The Landmine is much better in that case. It also is a bit thicker and less "cutting".

I also liked the Landmine more by itself and the XXLB in conjunction with the SansAmp for a more cutting (and compressed) sound. Here's a clip I've posted before (sorry for the excess finger noise) showing the range of dynamics for the XXLB. It's good that way, for soft/loud transitions, I just don't like it at all in the middle.

Enough rambling.

I will say this again. Last week I VOLUNTARILY ordered a bright green and yellow pedal with butterflies on it. And let's not forget the Save The Boobies B:Assmasters.

Thanks. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for both of them, but I think I'm leaning towards the Landmine. I really don't need lower gain options, nor am I overly concerned with dynamics. It's pretty much only going to be a balls-out distortion that I click on here and there.
