I was going thourgh some old mags at home when I found an 03 Total Guitar Bass Special. They had a feature where they ranked what they felt were the best, classic and most influencial bass to have been built. It seems a little UK oriented but I wounldn't stray to far from what they've got. What do you guys feel? 20 Fender Bass VI 19 Steinberger XL-2 18 Yamaha BB1000 17 Status Series II 16 JayDee Supernatural Classic 15 Burns Bison 14 Ibanez Musician 13 Danelectro Longhorn 12 Warwick Thumb 11 Fender Mustang 10 Ampeg AUB-1 9 WAL MK1 8 Hofner 500/1 7 Gibson Thunderbird 6 Gibson EB-2/Epiphone Rivoli 5 Gibson EB-3 4 Musicman Stingray 3 Rickenbacker 4001 2 Fender Jazz 1 Fender Precision I'd have found room for Alembic, maybe Spector NS and Aria pro 2 SB.
Too much Fender and why the EB3. If some of those basses were so great I am sure they would still be in production...
A longhorn? Maybe just that I have never played one, but those things look repulsive. If I wanted to see that caliber of ugly, I'd look in a mirror. Really, all kidding aside, are they that great a bass that you can overcome the fuglyness? And a Mustang over a Thumb? sheesh. At least a mustang isn't ugly as homemade soap.
#6 should say "Gibson EB-2/Epiphone Rivoli/Guild Starfire". And there should be some model by Alembic, Ken Smith and Fodera.
The good choices here I have highlighted. Influential basses, well, the list it well done there. How on earth is the Jaydee in that list...? Oh well, they are still amazing. If influence was out of the window, I'd be saying "What of Alembic, Kubicki and Fodera?"
I think it's a decent list overall, but I have never heard of #16 (the JayDee Supernatural Classic) or #15 (the Burns Bison).
On the right... They were very popular in the 80's, when Level 42 were at their most popular in Europe. Mark did wonders for Jaydee, Status and Alembic!
I think it's a good and balanced list, i've herad of most of them. the first 4 are spot on and i think they are all equal.
