Hi All! About two years ago I purchased a Jaguar SS for my first bass in 30 years. My musical background is guitar and keyboards. I bought a $600 Ampeg rig shortly after buying the Jag to practice with and I was disappointed. Lots of fan noise from the moment it was turned on. It was the 200 watt SVT micro head and matching 2 x 10 cab. The fit and finish on the cab wasn’t that nice. I returned it. I like the Jag bass and have been using a DI through my DAW and now I want a nice amp and cab for practice and a quality DI to record with. For the last month I’ve been checking out a few rigs at GC and thought the Trace Elliot 200 micro head and matching 2 x 8 sounded great with several SS’s. Here are my questions: Anyone compare the matching 1 x 10 cab vs the 2 x 8? Has anyone found a cab they really like with this head? Is the DI really studio quality? Thanks! Jxff
Here's the deal the 2x8 sounds great but 2 of the 110 cabs sounds great also and has more bottom end and less highs while still delivering very good mids. The 2x8 has decent lows and tons of mids and highs. My favorite combo is 1 2x8 and 1 1x10 together quite the combination gives you a bit better lows while still having plenty of mids and highs. If I had to pick either 2x8 or 1x10 I would have to go with the 2x8 just because it sounds a bit more open on the top. The DI is actually very good
I held my ear about 12” away from the fan holes of the Elf, maybe it’s the background noise at GC? I didn’t hear anything.
Mine ramps up pretty fast when playing loud, and ramps down pretty fast when I ease off. It’s a tiny fan so it has to spin fast to move air. It doesn’t bother me in the least, but thought I should mention it.
I’m a PC tech by trade and a DAW builder. The spin up is good info, the spin down even better. If it’s around noon across the knobs, is it relatively quiet?
I find it unobtrusive regardless of knob position. I can’t judge whether or not your ears will find it quiet.
I thought I’ve come close to what I want. Open to options, just want a small, articulate, great DI head for practice and recording. I won’t be playing live outside of house jams. Not worried about fan noise then.
Let’s find out... Paging @Fred from Peavey I love the two 2x8 ! Stacks higher and sounds better than 10’s
Friendly suggestion - you live in a place where there should be lots of options for bass gear besides GC. Might be worthwhile spending some time in other retailers that are more bass-focused and see what else is out there. Nothing against GC, but they're really not the best place to shop for bass gear. Should also be lots of decent bass gear available used in your market - you never know what you might be doing music-wise in a few years, many better options out there. I owned an Elf head for a while and didn't care for it, never tried their cabs though.
Recently I paired my ELF with a Bag End S15. It was a relatively low volume situation, but I really, really liked it. I was using a ZOOM B3n as a pre-amp and could pull tons of very useful tones out of that combination. P.S. I could not hear the fan at all.
Sounds like you are sensitive to fan noise. I am too! For what it's worth, I returned my ELF head due to unacceptable fan noise, and bought one of the fanless Quilter heads instead. (I bought the 100 watt Mini 101, but if you're sure you need 200 watts, you might check out the ProBlock 200 or ToneBlock 201.) Another fanless, dead-quiet brand to consider is Acoustic Image. Despite the name, their heads sound good with electric, too. Seems like there may be some variations with the ELF fan noise. Maybe a quality control issue, or a bad batch of parts? Some users find it to be a problem, while others say they can't hear it at all.
