Does anyone here know about the Trace Elliot GP7 SM? Is it a head or just a pre amp? I saw someone post this up on another forum, and Im wondering if you guys know any more about it, from what I gathered I think it has a 200 watt power amp (maybe what the SM stands for), while the GP7 stands for the pre amp.... Anyone on here have this amp, or any GP7's? trace's have always been pretty mysterious to me
I think the GP7 preamp was available as both as a separate unit, but that looks pretty much like the 150W GP7 preamp equipped head I've got(somewhere - I put it in storage a year or so ago). There was also a 300w version. There's a few variations - mine has slightly a different design of lines round the controls on the front panel, and later versions added a compressor and 3 LED input level indicator. I can't really tell from the photo which version that is, but a look at the back panel would probably tell you.
To me that look's like the 150W version of the GP7 amp. There have been various reincarnations of this amp around for a long while with combo's using the same layout and spec as what you've got there, not to mention amp and preamp versions as well. GP7 is used as it tells you what EQ it uses IE: GP7-7 Band EQ (Early Spec) GP11-11 band Eq GP12-12 Band EQ The fun begins when you start seeing things like,SM,SMX,X etc etc
here's another pic, need some answers, everyone advertises it as a pre-amp but on other forums they say it has a power amp... im so confused come on people give me some answers I know you have them it's a Trace Elliot GP7 SM
Part of the problem is that Trace used the same chassis and front graphics for many of their amps within a range. I used to own a GP7SM that had a 280W power section. When I bought it it was sitting next to an identical looking unit that was 150W. The only way to tell them apart was by the handwritten makings on the back. I have also seen pics of the GP7SM preamp and it looks just like those. Sort of annoying actually.
OK, read the SM .pdf manual and you should be able to tell the difference by the features it has. Here is a link to the manual: Trace Elliot SM series manual
According to the first page in the manual SM seems to stands for Sound Management. I just got given a GP7SM150W as a gift last night, I just happen to be in the right place at the right time, I'm totally made up!!!!! I used to use an older 410 and 115 stack that I used to blag off a buddy, its great to have my own TE now!!!!
Man was I very glad to find this old thread. I just traded for one of these pre amps and could find nothing on the net.....so thankful for TB! Trace is a brand I know so little about....I just know I like them....but damn could they have made the names of their products any more confusing?
it was painful on my laptop..... nothing came up...but I eventually found it..... but searching Team Trace Elliot did not get me what I wanted..... thanks though....
