I got a trade offer on a bass and it seemed to be acceptable. Made all the arrangements and got everything rolling. We had agreed to ship our respective basses on a certain date. Mine was sent out and tracking numbers sent. Days went by with no response, no tracking numbers and no bass in return. The bass I sent was delivered just as it should have been. Low and behold, a tracking number appears and a bass is enroute to me. 7 days after the bass was to be sent to me, it was finally shipped out. The bass "new to me" arrived packed pretty good. I opened it and immediately saw huge issues. This was supposed to be factory bass with a couple of changes. Turns out, the bass was a copy, neck had been defretted (supposed to be fretless) and on and on and on.. I e-mailed the person who told me that he was sorry about the mistake and that he would send me my bass back. However, that was now 3 days ago and I have not heard another word. I am not talking about a very expensive bass, but with the lack of response and considering the other party did not ship his bass to me until after my bass arrived, I am really thinking scam here. I have not received any notice or follow up message to shipping my bass back or anything to the sort... Any advice?? I think I got schistered..

Well here it is 5 days later and no word from the guy. He messaged me on the 11th and told me he could not make it to ship out my bass until Saturday, but of course Saturday has come and gone and nothing... I hope I'm not out a bass... This is disturbing

You definitely were scammed. Don't fear negative feedback, the mods can take care of that if he retaliates. Leave feedback, contact the mods. They can't get the bass back, but they can get his account shut down so he can't do it to anyone else.

The "cool" thing is that he used the post office to commit fraud. Print all your conversations, photograph the bass you received and contact your postmaster. Maybe nothing will come of it, but the person that scammed you committed a federal offense which can carry some hefty jail time and ruin the rest of his life. If he wants to risk that, cool. If not, ship the bass back ASAP. (I'm guessing he's reading this too.)

Good advice. I will start first thing on this one. I am just really hoping that he resolves all this without any problems.

You have his address? How far away is he? Any friends in the area?

I had a deal go bad (dude accused my bass of being a MIM and not a USA) and I was ready to pay dude a visit if I didn't get my bass back and in the same condition I sent it!

Good news on this one. Turns out the person is just a kid. called him at 6am his time. Woke him up and let him know where I was coming from. He explained he was "out of town" and wasn't checking his TB. That's why he did not get any of my messages. Long story - I have a UPS tracking number which will be delivered mid week and I will see how it comes back and then ship him back his bass.. I am out $60 for all the shipping, but at least I am getting my bass back.

    That sucks.

  8. iriegnome, please keep us posted when you get your bass back.

My rule of thumb on trades is: If you don't have established feedback, you ship first and when I receive it I will ship my stuff out (unless we are talking a small trade <$60). Until someone has established feedback on TB they need to realize the rules might be a little different. If they don't understand I don't need their item.

Glad this seems to be a misunderstanding rather than a scam. We were all young once and had no clue about gear!!

It should be delivered tomorrow. I just got an e-mail from the guy I traded wanting to know if I had shipped his bass back to him.. I told him that I would release his bass when mine was returned in the original condition it was shipped out to him as. He did not reply..

Update, my bass is supposed to be delivered late this morning and I am ready to ship out his bass back to him this afternoon after inspecting my bass. This really sucks. Not only am I out the $60 in shipping basses back and forth, but I was looking forward to what his bass was supposed to be. On the bright side, this all could have gone much worse and I could have ended up with a $50 bass and lost my MIA bass... What gets me is I have never had any issue with sales, trades or purchases from someone here on TB... It is kind of a stunner..

Final update on this user Journey55. I did not leave negative feedback. I have received my bass back in the same condition I sent it out in. I think this kid just flaked out and I got lucky. His bass is back on it's way to him in the original box packed in the original material it came in. I have been a member here for almost 12 years. Never have I had any issues trusting a fellow TB'er. I almost lost one, but I still consider my TB family a trusted and well worthy bunch of people.

  12. He tried to put one over on you. Everyone else is due fair warning.

Because I did not totally loose everything, I have left neutral feedback with a detailed account of the trade.

Good move on the feedback details. It's more than a leap of faith dealing with someone on TB (especially someone with feedback) so I think you were right to be concerned. Kid or no, there are repercussions for misrepresenting yourself or your goods on TB: I would never do a deal with someone if I had the details on this transaction. Really glad to hear you got your bass back!

My question is: Would you do another deal like this with a TB'er in the future?

I have bought and sold on the net for 15+ years now. As a very early member of E-bay and for so long here that a bad deal is part of it. I have had deals that did not go this good. Yes, I would still work a trade and make purchases and sell things. I took all of the steps to research what I was selling and trading and I would do it again.. No question about that

  17. I hope the neutral gives fair warning. You would probably not take a 2nd chance on the kid. I would not take a 1st.
