So I'm interested in a Traynor YBA-3 tube head that I've found for sale. I currently use a Music Man HD 150, which is tube power with solid state pre. The idea is to sell the MM head, since I really don't need two. I guess the question I have is if it's worth the trade-off. My dirt mainly comes from pedals, and the MM is slightly more powerful. I have never actually played through a YBA-3, but am told it's based off the Marshall Super Bass.

I can't remember if all YBA3's have the master volume, but the ones that do go from clean to dirty and sound great doing it if they've had their maintenance done (pots, caps, etc). They're a great amp - I've owned several over the years. I can't address if it's worth the trade-off though as I've never owned a HD150.

Thanks for the reply. This one has an MV and was recently serviced. I think it's a later model YBA-3.

My first amp was a YBA-3; great amp but too heavy for me these days, otherwise I'd like have another one.

I don't recall any of them having a MV as stock, is the one you are considering modded?

I know the one I had, had a Master Volume stock. The earlier ones may not have.

I just checked out some photos and I see the late '70s version placed the two input jacks vertically and made room for a MV next to them. Mine was from '74 so pre-MV.

I'm wrong on the MV. This one doesn't have it. However, the MM does have one. Maybe I would be better off just sticking with my amp.

I thought the MV was a feature in the early 70's. I have what I've always thought to be a 71-72 YBA-3 with a Master Volume. It's a stout 130w but I would want to compare it directly to the HD if I was deciding between them.

the Traynor YBA-3 didn't get the Master volume till about 71/72, a tuned up YBA-3 is a pretty clean amp .... as to the comparison between the two, I can't say, I haven't had a MusicMan amp ....

The MM is really clean and fairly loud. It will break up but generally doesn't sound good doing so.
