Trey Gunn

  1. GAWOW! This guy.................... Don't hear much talk of him . Any more fans?

I used to could only hear Levin on the Thrak album but then Gunn hit me with some friggin amazing stuff. I know it's not really bass guitar , but it's still bass. Even if it is Touch Guitar or whatever you call that thing, the Warr guitar maybe? Any info on it?

Warr guitar is what he plays. I have a hard time picking out what he's playing most of the time on Thrak... everybody has to be so subtle in order to fit on the tracks... most of the time it sounds like there is one drummer as well... it's weird.. the double trio... what a lineup.

Trey's solo stuff w/ pat mastelotto blows every portion of my mind.

  3. Yeah, Trey Gunn is great. He's one of my favorite musicans. Pretty nice guy too. He let me photograph a few of his shows:

Here are a bunch of Warr pics too:

I highly recommend his Live Encounter solo CD. His DVD is great too. I was at a few of the shows on it.

Trey is a great guy with terrific chops, and he does play a Warr.

I saw him on Eric Johnson's "Vortexan" dates and it was difficult to pick out what he was playing far too often. Maybe the Warr is just a difficult instrument to get any definition out of. I found his work with Crimson to be more subtle and prone to be lost in the mix too.

Anybody with more experience with Warr's?

I don't know what you guys think, but the name "Trey Gunn" is just about the most badass name i've ever heard!

I know he's on Thrak and Gordian Knot, but I have trouble picking him out. Is the beginning of the song "People" Tony Levin with the funk fingers, or Trey on the Warr?

Trey is a nice guy & a fine musician. My problem with the tapping thing all night long is it CAN be ill defined and hard to hear...you need a lot of compression to make that work, and sometimes I just want to hear the natural envelope of a string being struck & decaying.

    Just my 2 cents. ;)

I dig his work with King Crimson. I've been watching the Eyes Wide Open DVD quite a lot (especially the Japanese concert). I especially like his fretless playing, on that piezo equipped half-fretless nine string monster Warr.

I've seen him live a bunch of times with the Crimson double trio and the Projekcts. Good stuff! He needs to loose the pirate shirts though.

  10. I had the pleasure of seeing Trey live in 1999 or so when he played a few shows with a spoken word guy named Percy Howard, with Vernon Reid on guitar. They were just kind of jamming around on some ambient chord progressions, but god damn, Trey's 'bass' sounded phat as all hell. Ridiculously huge tone.

  11. I saw Crimson live in 2004 and it was one of the most amazing experiences in my life, Trey is a truly amazing artists in the bass universe...

  12. That's Brian Kenney Fresno. I've photographed him on dozens of occasions. He's a musicomedic genius. He has a web site at: http://www.bonghitrecords.com/

Why does the name of his label not surprise me. :D

    I'll check that out!

  14. DG,

For a small sum (which you could clearly substitute in weed), you could easily have Fresno play with you guys at your bass gig in May. This...would RULE!! ;) I'll definitely drive up from LA for your show (to heckle Schmidty)....
