Hi all, I couldn't find other posts about this, and hope I'm not repeating others, but there is a Charlie Haden Memorial concert at Town Hall on Tuesday January 13th. Many people who played with him will be performing. It's free, but also a fundraiser to continue music education. Here's a better description of this event: Note, it's tomorrow evening! Wish I could be there, and am keen on hearing reviews...
What a beautiful night of music and remembrances that was last night. Phew.. Really felt Charlie's spirit in the hall. Any other NY TB'ers make it out?
Hi Phil, Any highlights you'd care to mention? I looked for reviews in your newspapers this morning, but didn't find anything... CHeers, Paul (eh_train)
Paul, that review you posted sums it up quite well and probably better than how I'd be able to put it in to words. It was all just really amazing and it helped everyone see Charlie's many dimensions and struggles, etc. Ruth Haden spoke between all the performances both telling remembrances and also setting up the next band. Putter Smith (an old friend of Charlie's back from the late 50s/early 60s LA scene), Fred Ansis (Charlie's lawyer for 40 years) and Jean Phillipe Allard (managing director of universal music publishing who'd known Charlie for just as long as Fred) all told really great stories about Charlie, full of funny anecdotes. The performances were just as incredible as you might imagine. I had never seen a number of the performers before (Kenny Barron, Pat Metheney, Jack DeJohnette, the Haden sisters w/ Josh Haden), or Lee Konitz and Brad Mehldau as a duo like that, so it was all pretty phenomenal to me. Henry Butler's spiritual singing was definitely a highlight too. Here's a good write up on the NY Times' site: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/15/arts/jazz-musicians-memorialize-charlie-haden.html?_r=0
This is a really great read that captures the beauty of what took place at Town Hall at the Charlie Haden memorial: http://darkforcesswing.blogspot.com/2015/01/as-long-as-theres-earth-celebrating.html
