I'm a newbie. Literally haven't picked up a bass guitar in 20 years and just got one for Christmas. Fender Precision Squier Pro-Tone 5 string. Gorgeous instrument to look at. I've broken the 4th string (2nd skinniest?), trying to tune to G. Not fun. I REALLY want to play this thing. It sounds great. Except for this string. Help?

Tuning for that bass should be B-E-A-D-G. "Second skinniest" string should be D, not G. That's why it's breaking - it ain't made to be tuned that high.
  3. It is okay to tune strings down from, say E to D, but if you try higher, say D to G, then...well, you did, so now you know.:D
