Oh, Yall gon make me lose my mind, up in here!
ok ok ok...
please don't hate me for stating the obvious
a song can be FUNKY whether the bass is fingered, picked, slapped, or tapped, or (?)
a slapped bass can fit into many styles of music...
funk, progressive, punk, punk-metal, jazz, reggae, or (?)
i do dig the topic of converstion here, but i'm sure i'm not alone in my viewpoint of "funk and slap"
I remember saying something along those lines once... that's just a general rule of mine though. If the funk ain't so thick that go gotta take a shower afterwards... well, it probably wasn't quite funky enough.
Wizzard from Mother's Finest told me one time that when it gets that nasty, it's FONK with an "o"... he oughta know.
According to the stellar funk group, Slave, it is "fungk"!
Guys, Keep on Fungking the Fonk! If it ain't phunkee don't Funque it!
Kim Clarke sez, "It's Defunkt".
...ya gotta love a band that's outta The Art Ensemble Of Chicago/Sun Ra & P-Funk/JB school!
On a tangent, Lester Bowie's American Gumbo(a 2-cd set that includes both Last Fast! & Rope A Dope)is a happenin' excursion into '70s Acid Funk/Jazz.
Speaking of Ozone, they also had another song called "Lil Suzy", which was their hit so to speak. How about "Super Chick" and "Rhyme Time People" by Kool and the Gang, "Nursury Rhymes" by People's Choice? Oh and "Skip to My Lou" by Finis Henderson. He's a stand up comedian now!
Incubus (especially new incubus) in by no means a funk band, but listen to Battlestar Scralatchtica, of of Make Yourself. The song isnt even funk, but the bassline is funky.
Hey, Old Skool Funkateers-
...what's the scoop on Gonzalez, a '70s R&B/Funk band outta London?
Gonzalez' personnel included Carl Douglas(yeah, I know), Phil Chen, & Richard Bailey.
That's Phil Chen AND Richard Bailey of Blow By Blow fame! I don't know about you, but IMO, those guys smoked on that album. Anyway, the Gonzalez debut record is from pretty much the same time frame('74).
Personally, I missed out on these guys...it's that damn Funk book hipping me to some more s***!
BTW, the capsule review sez "...gritty, defiantely funky & higher on substance than the contemporary AWB".
"Higher on substance"? I guess that could be a good thing
I like the part about being "defiantely funky".
Anyway, I found it @Tower & ordered it...should be here in a couple weeks.
Who does funk have to defy... Yanni?
Ever hear Ric's solo on "Live at the Acropolis?
*I'll do it for the Yannites
No, I haven't heard Ric's solo with Yanni...I imagine it's pretty good(one bass solo, no matter how *great*, isn't enough for me to sit through 2 hours of Yawni).
Same here... I just left the smiley out.
I don't remember who said Mark wasn't funky in this thread, but i dug out "World Machine" this weekend, and Damn! Were there some Badazz grooves on there. Mark King gets a bad rap for being a slapmeister, but listen to that recording again. His line on :good man in a storm" is Rocco-Funky, and no pops anywhere till the end.
Also, the title track, which id Key Bass, till the vamp. Then MK does this groove solo that rocks!!!
If you don't think Level 42 is funky, i suggest you listen again!
damn that pretty funky, i love his style myself and think he's the master of 16th note fingerstyle. I havent really heard too many others play it tho. Its still somewhat a new style of music for me.
