Truss rod loose whenever strings are off?

    I'm going to do some work on my bass and will need the strings off for a day. Do I need to loosen the truss rod?

    nope. the strings pull the neck right back when you put them back on.

    Though if you ever are going to leave the strings off for an extended period of time you should loosen the rod a bit right?

    Correct. But don't loosen it too much; just enough so there is no odd tension on it in either direction.
