If the trussrod nut is hard to turn, something is wrong.
I ' help' it by bracing the bass between my feet and counter the string tension by pulling back (not too hard) on the headstock end. Releasing some of the string tension takes stress off the small threads on the trussrod until the adjustment is made. Then retune and recheck relief.
Could also be (likely) that the threads are dry and need some lube. Best to remove the nut and lube the threads with LockEase or something similar that dries and stays dry. Then, 'help' the trussrod get the neck back to the correct relief as explained above- don't expect those tiny threads to counter +/- 200lbs of string tension plus wood memory all by itself. Go carefully, force nothing.
