Tube amp question

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by i_got_a_mohawk, Oct 24, 2005.

  1. the driver section in my SVT II has a single 12ax7 and two 12au7's, i was wondering, would i be able to use 12ax7's in place of the 12au7's?

From what i gather, the 12au7's are the same circuit as the 12ax7, they just have a lower gain

Or would putting the higher gain tubes in just send too hot a signal?

(im just looking at ways of overdrive the power tubes :ninja: )

Overdrive the power tubes? Crank it!

  3. I want to be able to reach 12 on the volume dial :p

  4. You'll turn your amp into a BAD sounding distortion box with a LOT less volume than you had before. The 12AU7 supplies POWER, not voltage gain, and it can do a whole lot more power than a 12AX7.

  5. ah right, of well, just an idea
