  1. so. the title is pretty self-explanatory.

    for under a grand?

and PS, i already know about the obvious (Mesa, Ampeg, Aguilar)

  2. not many. only one off the top of my head is the v4b, but then i guess u could find some used.

I'll never part with my Peavey Classic 400 www.classic400.com but the new Holy Grail to many is the new Sadowsky tube head... the old Holy Grail was the Trace Elliot V8 / V6 / V4 line.

I'm looking to score an Orange Rockerverb 100 (loaded with KT88 it's about ~120 watts) as a smaller head.

Hiwatt & reeves look cool too

If you know about Ampeg and Mesa already ,what are you looking for then?
As far as tube amps go those are THE widely accepted leaders.
You could look into Sunn,Trace,Peavey,Orange as an alternitive choice and you'll find happy users in those camps, but they'er small camps.

Under a grand? Besides the used option, Pignose and Traynor come to mind.

    traynor yba200 - $679
    pignose b-100VH - $524

the traynor is 200 watts and the pignose is 100 watts. For cheaper you can get the pignose one in a combo form with a 15" speaker. I think these two are the cheapest you'll find. A lot of good things have been said about both. The esteemed tombowlus gave the traynor the best tube amp for its money award.

  7. Traynor's YBA is quite good, powerful, and pretty cheap. Ampeg's V-4BH is a 100 watt counterpart to the legendary SVT. I rock one and it's definitely amazing.

For anything really under a grand that's relatively easy to comeby, and that isn't what you already are aware of (Mesa, Ampeg, Aguilar) then you'd be hard pressed to beat the Traynor TBA200.

Especailly if you took some of the leftover money and retubed it.

Fender Bassman 100. You can get one for about $400 or so, and they sound great.

Wow, I am esteemed! :D [thank you!]

Yes, indeedy-doo. This post sums it up nicely (as does James Hart's post, above).

The YBA-200 is crazy good for the mony, in my book. :)

Some great used heads to look for in that price range, IMHO, would include (in no particular order): Mesa D-180/400/400+, Trace Quattra Valve (or Hexa, if you're really lucky), Trace V4 (or V6, if you're really lucky).

+20 zillion. Not the loudest amp out there, but sounds unbelievable. Mine's a lowly 50 watt version (blackface) and it sounds incredible.

A big dumb +1 on James's Peavey Classic 400 post. Easily under $1k but you may have some trouble finding one.

I've been gigging mine twice a week (on average) for almost 8 months now. It's not going anywhere anytime soon...

Hi-fi into an old tube amp
If you go on the used market, you can easily find a $1700-new Mesa Bass 400+ (or SVT) for under $800.

  18. yba 200 is the best value out there. PM me if you want a place to order it even lower than $675.
