Tube overdrive question

    Hello all,

I recently got myself a tube-preamp (my amp is a solid state, mind you) and I'm a tad confused about overdriving it.

I mean, what do you do when overdriving your tube-preamp? I do know that you deal in some more gain, of course. But let's say you're going to play one part of the song with a clean tone and one part with the overdrive. You hit the gain booster (?) and you get the tube overdrive sound, but it will also be loud as hell?

How do you overdrive your preamp without wiping the room with loud-as-hell-volume, is that even possible?

I hope this made sence at all :rollno:

Also, when I put my aphex punch factory before the preamp and turn up the gain on the pre I get no OD?

    I'm confused! :bawl: :help:

    Thanks in advance.
