Tube popping noise

  1. so my Traynor YBA200-2 is having these popping issues every now and then. It's not really loud, but its a faint noise that occurs about every 5 seconds or so and i want to know is something wrong with it? Would replacing some tubes fix this? Or is this really nothing to worry about and just an annoying side-effect of using an all-tube amp?

    thanks,
    Andrew

No, it shouldn't do that. Could be a preamp tube just starting to go, could possibly just be a dirty socket, too. Try pulling your tubes out and poking them in and out of the sockets a couple times. It's a quick and dirty way of cleaning the sockets. Also, if you have a spare 12AX7, try it out in each of the 12AX7 sockets. I'm not familiar with the Traynor, but considering its price, it's not unlikely you might have a bad tube. But it could also be something unrelated to the tubes as well. I'm no expert. I just know I've heard that sound with dirty sockets and preamp tubes that are on their way out.

  3. Thanks for the advice, the guy i bought it from on here replaced the 12AX7's with JJ's but left the Sovtek 12AU7 in there, and I'm guessing that's the culprit. I will, however, be trying the socket cleaning suggestion that you gave me....but isn't it dangerous to do that?

Nah, not dangerous if you unplug it and don't touch anything but the tubes.

  5. Is it the YBA-200, or YBA-200-2?

I know my YBA-200 did a bunch of popping every time I turned it on, and then a tube blew after about 2 months of that. I don't know if that was a symptom of the bias circuit, but I'd recommend having a tech bring it up to the -2 spec, which is much more stable.
