I am looking to get a solid, smooth sounding tube power amp and looking for anyone's personal experieince with either of the amps mentioned. I am rebuilding my bass rig and wanna go this route.

Don't know about these firsthand, but at least the Mesa is designed with guitars in mind (probably the VHT is, too, based on the focus of the company). Which doesn't necessarily rule 'em out for bass applications--they may be perfectly fine--but I'd think you could do better starting off with a mono amp designed with bass in mind (e.g. Aguilar DB728, Demeter) or even one of the Boogie Strategy stereo tube amps that's known to work well for bass.
