TubeWorks and Genz Benz Combos

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by count_funkula, Dec 4, 2001.

  1. Bass player chose the TubeWorks 7200-15 as the hands down winner in the 15" combo shootout. They chose it over SWR, Ampeg, Nemesis and others.

Does anybody have any experience with these combos? What about the GenzBenz GBE series?

  2. So nobody here knows anything about these combos?

i remember when i bought my swr basic black back in '95. i nearly bought a tubeworks amp instead. the only reason i didn't was that i was working out a deal for a used fender jazz plus 5 and that amp, and it fell through. i still regret not getting the amp though - it was every bit as good as the basic black for less money. i haven't heard the new 7200 though - sorry.

I'm using the ML line of combos. I have one of the older ML-12Ts (135W, 1x12 w/tweeter, kickback design). I'm waiting for the re-arrival of a ML200-112T to pair with it (it had a minor mechanical problem, which I attribute to shipping damage, so my dealer is getting me another one). It has a lot more eq control (semi-parametric mids, gain/master setup, 3 shape buttons), more power (200W) can run with an extension cab (but in a somewhat strange way) and kickback design.

They sound fine to me (I'm not an amp expert, this is only the 3rd amp I've ever had). I can use them as powered stage monitors (for just me/bass or for the whole mix) or stack them for a 335W 2x12 stack. I'm looking forward to trying the "stack" when I get the replacement in. And both are 50lbs or less and fit in the trunk of my Maxima.

But you are interested in the GBE (and Tubeworks) line which I haven't tried. My local dealer is a small, primarily acoustic guitar shop that doesn't stock anything except the Intro line (and the guitar amps) so I don't get to try out the different options. My local dealer is very happy with Genz Benz's support and quality (as am I - I went and bought a second one).

My dealer did tell me that Genz Benz was recently picked up by a much larger distributer.

I've had very good response from Genz Benz customer service.

I have a Genz Benz 250 GBE 115. I thought the fan was too noisy, so I called Genz Benz. They sent me out a new fan in the mail right away. This was before I'd even sent in the warranty card.

The new fan turned out to have the same sound as the original. It's not loud, really, but I am practicing in my apartment, so I am at a really low volume. The heatsink stays cool to the touch. Even at the low volume, I like the sound of the 15. I like the amp a lot, and the company.

I am thinking of putting in a thermal switch so that the fan only comes on when the amp gets hot, or maybe a temperature controlled fan.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
