I have a '95 P bass. I recently bought a cheap J bass neck to swap and see how I like it. It came without tuning machines but with the old screw holes.

I know how to fill the old holes but my question is how do I determine where to drill the holes for the two studs at the top of the factory tuners.

They are held on by the bushing nut and these two studs keep them locked in place.

I usually carefully line up and mark the tuners where I want them mounted. Then I just press using hand pressure and let the little studs create small indentations. I then check those little indentations to ensure they are aligned, and then drill the indentations out with the same size bit as the diameter of the studs. You can even do this with a hand-drill if you're brave, but a drill press helps accuracy...

The holes I am filling are so close to the new holes that just pressing....or even wacking with a hammer won;t leave a well enough defined mark.
