Tuner (peg) instability

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by c-ba55, Aug 7, 2002.

  1. I've had my fretless Fender Jazz standard for a few years now, and recently the E string is radically detuned whenever (well, not always but quite often) I pick it up. I store it on a wall hanger, and carry it around in a gig bag. All the other strings are basically fine and the E string will be almost a D. The mechanism doesn't seem to be broken or loose or anything. Any ideas? Besides my roommate secretly joining a nu-metal band?

It is really impossible for the gears of a bass tuner to slip, unless the cogs have disappeared - something that I never saw in 30 years of dealing with basses.

So it must be either because the tuner get knocked around, or the string is not fixed on the post well. The latter is the cause of 99% of the complaints about instruments detuning - usually on guitars though.
