Tunes With The Stingray Sound

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by bgavin, Dec 23, 2001.

  1. Please post a short list of your tunes that really feature the Stingray sound. I'd like to get an idea of what they sound like.
  2. almost any fugazi song. "waiting room" is a standout.

For a stingray slap sound, "So you say" - by John Scofield, and Gary Grainger on bass - nails it.

alot of stuff that tony levin plays has th "stingray" sound. umm... I guess the older RHCP stuff had the stingray sound.. although flea uses some effects... No Doubts bass player uses the stingray for certain songs.. Its hard to hear On the new album Rock steady, but on tragc kingdom I think is when he first started using a stingray.. he also plays on a nice yamaha bass, i really like it. anyone know what kind model yamaha he uses.. it a p & J configuration.. and it just looks cool ;)

I originally posted a tune played on a P-Bass. The video had a StingRay in it, but now I'm much older and wiser.

Some sound samples on CDNow that I could find with prominent Stingrayness:

King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair - "Sleepless" (slap)

Uh, that's about all I could find, I'm probably forgetting some.

That MxPx track sounds like it could be a P-bass, albeit with the treble cranked.

    Prominent Stingray players:

Tony Levin (fretted, fretless, slap, pick, fingers, Funk Fingers. Also plays Chapman Stick a lot so don't get them confused)

Dave Allen - Gang of Four/Shriekback

I think Pino Palladino played fretless Stingray for a while?

Gail Ann Dorsey - David Bowie

Simon Gallup - The Cure (on Pornography and Head on the Door)

Ooh, here's one: The Cure - Pornography - "The Hanging Garden"

Also "Push" from Head on the Door.

While the Stingray has a less versatile sound than, say a Jazz, it can sound pretty different depending on the EQ settings. Kim Deal in the Pixies played one with dead, old strings and a pick and got a fairly dull, round sound. Tony Levin uses the treble boost and some overdrive to get a really aggressive sound (as do most of the punk/hardcore players who play Stingray).

I second MxPx. All of their songs have that great stingray bass + ampeg amp + pick sound. A similar tone is on Dude Ranch by Blink 182. But I think Mark Hoppus used a Mesa Boogie 400+ to record that album, not an ampeg.
  11. michael jackson's off the wall album has louis johnson playing a stingray on some tracks that's pretty audible in the mix.

  12. Tony from No Doubt's PJ bass is a Yamaha.. the model escapes my mind.. BB3000? (edit: htag beat me to it.. I didn't read all the responses closely enough.. sorry!)

He does use various Stingrays and Stingray 5's a lot too.

Timmy C of Rage Against the Machine uses a Stingray for their first album.

Most At the Drive-In songs show off the Stingray sound pretty well.
  13. What is Sublime using on the Santoria track?

Older Chili Peppers stuff. Flea played a Stingray(among a few others) before he switched over to Modulus.

Any of Bernard Edwards stuff with Chic, or his bass on "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge.
    Music Man Bass with flatwounds...

Also, check out Sade's "Sweetest Taboo" - especially the little bass break towards the end. The Stringray sound really stands out.

Really? I didn't know that. I'd only seen him playing something with a cream-colored P pickup in a video.

Love the bass sound in "Good Times". So rich, and growly.
