Good day, I trust you are all doing very well.

I’m brand new to TB and I look forward to being part of this community.

I’m trying to learn the bass to the song lines to below and I can’t even figure out how the bass is tuned.

Please advise on the tuning, and perhaps even the key. That will help me work through it. It’s a great tune, by the way. Sweet bass line.

    Thanks,
    Alex

    Welcome @Lexfunk! It's a weird community, but fun :D:D

I'm not trying to be insulting, but typically bass is tuned E A D G. On a 5-string bass, you would have a low B before the E. On a 6-string bass, the G string (smirk) would be followed by a C. Hope that helps...

My question was a bit ambiguous. I should have asked if the bass played in this song had standard tuning. I assume it is, but when I try to play it by ear things just don’t sound right. So I thought it might have been in a nonstandard tuning.

So, Jupit, are you saying this song is played with standard tuning?

    Thanks,
    Alex

:D:D A bit! I didn't get to listen with headphones, so no, that's not what I'm saying. I can't imagine why he would use a non-standard tuning other than maybe tuning down a half-step/whole-step etc..

You're new to TalkBass, but I don't know how new to bass you are, so again I'm not trying to insult your intelligence or knowledge.

Down-tuning is pretty common. I played in a punk band many moons ago, & our singer had trouble hitting some of the notes he used to sing, so we tuned all our instruments down a half-step. Maybe that's what's going on in this song. If it is, I understand your frustration. I'm self-taught, & it would throw me off when I was learning! Even worse was when an album would have songs that weren't tuned to the same pitch...

Yeah, that could be it. But I think I’ve got it (or at least, getting closer to getting it).

Been playing guitar since 1999. A buddy left a bass at my place about a year ago and I’ve been playing around with it on and off since then.

    Thanks,
    Alex
