i have a few questions about tuning. i'm sorry if there was already a post on this, and if there is, would somebody please refer me to it. i was wondering how to tune a bass 1/2 step down, and how to tune it to drop D. thanks for the help.

    Two choices:

    1. Buy a chromatic electronic tuner and tune to Eb, Ab, Db, Gb

    For drop D: D A D G

    2. Fret each string @ the 1st fret and tune it to the value of the empty string (E A D G). That way you tune all strings flat one semitone, which is what you want to achieve.

    For drop D:

Fret the E @ 2nd fret and and tune to E.
Tune the others to standard tuning (ADG).

    That's it!

    Easy, huh?

lemme put this in not theory educated words

    for Drop D tuning
im guessing you already know how to tune by ear *as in holding the 5th fret to get the open string below*

    for drop d you....
loosen the E string till you can hold the 7th fret to get the sound of the open A

    hope its simple enuf!
