I have been wondering about installing 2 jacks in my basses. That way I can separate the pickups. What I thought about was installing a switch so if you didn't want two outputs you could run both pickups though one source. Or flip the switch and hook up another cord to a different amp or stereo preamp. What do you think?

It's easy to do, but why? It'd be a lot easier to use an A/B/Y switch on the floor with "possibly" a stereo jack if you really want to separate the pickups.
    Or.....get a P Bass.

If both pups are wired to one jack how is a box on the floor going to separate the signal? If you separate the pups at the bass you can mix the two signals any way you want and get some interesting tones. Or by not using the switch you get a standard two pickup bass.

I'm highly opinionated and extremely self-assured
I did this years ago, when I was obsessed with the Ric-O-Sound option. Lacking an actual Rickenbacker, I drilled a hole in my Yamaha and added a second jack. It was a switched jack, so if only using one cord, I still had both pickups fed to the "main" jack.

I never once played a gig or recorded anything with this stereo setup, though...

It'd be easier to install a second jack. I considered doing this to my fretless as well for a fet neck tone and a growly bridge tone. The ABY box would come in handy for combining and easily switching between both pickups.

  6. It is very easy to add in a switch to combine outputs, but wouldn't it just be easier to use an output jack with a little switch that breaks contact when a cable is inserted?
Anytime only one cable is inserted, the signal is combined from both jacks into whichever one is plugged in.

I was just wondering if it would be a dumb selling point. I hav'nt done it, I guess I'm more curious if bassest would like it or hate it. I guess I could build one as a prototype and see how it goes over. I do know that on the touch-style guitars I've build it's something standard without the switch of course.

  8. Wait, couldn't you replace the existing jack with a single stereo jack? Then use a stereo patch cord and a stereo "y" splitter to run the channels separately to a board or to two separate amps? If you want to combine the two channels into one, use a stereo to mono adapter and plug that into your amp/board.
That's how I manage my modded P (with a Dimarzio Model One). Works fine and I don't have to deal with a tangle of extra patch cords. The one drawback is that the choice of stereo patch cords is very limited.

    Good luck and have fun.

The problem with that is if you lose the y cable or it quits working. On my tappers I always install two jacks so you can run regular guitar cords.

  11. I forget what these jacks are called, but here is one:

RadioShack used to sell these a long time ago.

Get two of these jacks and connect the break from one to the tip of the other for both jacks.

When two cables are inserted, you have independent outputs.
If only one cable is inserted into to either jack, both outputs will combine to that jack.

Scott from Local H has a guitar that also has a bass pup with a second jack installed. One output goes to a pedalboard and a guitar amp, while the other goes to a pedalboard and a bass amp. Pretty cool. Not sure if I really have anything useful to add though.

  15. What are "long reach" jacks?

Search up the Mouser site, you should be able to find what you want.

bear in mind i have no idea what i'm doing...

i have 2 output jacks on all three of my gigging basses. i use two volume pots and no tone pots. i use a pot with a built-in switch to send the bridge pickup output to either jack. i use this setup all the time for tuning on stage. the original idea was to run the bridge pickup through a different amp for an overdirve/stereo effect; that hasn't happened yet. later, ron

The ones that go though the end of the bass body, they are around 2" long.

they (as well as duncan) also have wiring diagrams.

I triead a stereo jack with a hi end stereo cable and found the capacitance to be high enough that it bled some treble off, so I go with 2 jacks. but thats up to you.

I think we are getting off tract. I just wanted to know if it would be a good selling point.
