I was asked to play a two step beat with a country band tonight. I assumed it was the dance but they meant cut time. Am I missing something? Is that a legit term?

Well, it does mean the dance which is done to most any country tune with the proper beat. Which means cut time and a tempo in the range of 160-180. Tempo matters in dancing so just playing cut time isn't good enough if a "two step beat" is wanted. I presume it went OK.

Think of a song like "On The Road Again" by Willie Nelson to get a good two-beat example.

Thanks guys. Yes it went well. As soon as I heard it I was there. I come from a jazz theory background and the country guys don't speak the same language, unless you are talking to Willie Nelson who is a jazz guitarist.
  5. What other kind of country dance beat is there? :bag:
