Just checked out John Scofield's latest called Uberjam Deux with Andy Hess on bass and Adam Deutch and all I have to say is if you want a lesson on R & B grooves pick it up. It is smokin!
I got it this week, I dig it! Nice Meters meets Mayfield grooves with a lot in between, I've always dug Andy Hess's grooves.
I find this super-disappointing. To me there's no point to this as I've heard it all before. Even from Scofield. It is not even a particularly good example of the genre and not even close to Überjam which I had hoped this to have built upon. A sincere and whole hearted thumps down from me for Überjam Deux. I find it lazy and arrogant for Sco to have released this.
I am in complete agreement with this. It sounds half-baked, dull and partially ripped off from Überjam and Up All Night and even itself (several themes and grooves are interchangable). Those first two albums were edgy and hip, Überjam Deux just feels forced. The vitality from the drums, in particular, is missing. There a few cool break downs and some okay solo bits, but mainly this is a lame experience. It just sounds old and tired.
I'm a massive Scofield fan and was afraid of this when checking out some on YouTube... Hopefully it will get better with time ?
Good Luck! I personally am quite past that and now hoping for a better cd to get released by him soon.
No right or wrong when assessing music to your likes, it's all personal, but to me, I love it! I find myself cranking it louder and louder, by the time I reach my driving destination I find myself ready to bust a move! Lol. It generally puts me in a happy mood, and to me any music that can trigger an emotional reaction (good or bad) generally gets my thumbs up.
Hmm. Uberjam is a killer album, and Sco is one of my all time faves. I reckon I'm gonna have to give 'Deux' the highway test before deciding
