I recently got this bass and just opened the control cavity for the first time. What is going on here, and how concerned should I be? Do I need to have this redone?

It is copper, copper discolors. (My copper roof turned green, it still doesn't leak) Leave it alone until you start having shielding issues.

Yep, once again I find myself agreeing with Sissy Kathy. Copper oxidizes pretty quickly. Unless you have a problem leave it alone.

Almost looks like a rectangular outline of corrosion - I wonder if the battery is right under that spot, and leaked? If there's no obvious damage or issues anywhere else and the shielding has good continuity to ground, then yes, it's fine.

Yeah that dark spot is where the battery is, but the current battery is fine, no signs of leakage. The bass is 15 years-old, so plenty of time for it to happen.

Thanks guys, I'll just leave it for now.

Wash it off at least if there is any acid left. Just wipe it with water and baking soda.

Thats a battery leak, happened on a bass of mine I sort of "forgot" about. The acid eats right through the copper. The conductive adhesive copper foil is cheap, I'd just clean it off and put another layer of copper over it, like 10 minutes work max. Or not, if it doesnt hum.

  8. Except alkaline batteries aren't acidic, they are alkaline. Scrub the discolored area with a little bit of soapy water and and old tooth brush; wipe it dry and call it good.
