Who do you think are some of the under-rated bassists in music?

I see Skynard's bassist being tossed around for being under-rated. (100% Agree)

I'll post some over-rated bassists in awhile. ( I don't want to get flamed until a conversation gets going)

  2. Underrated: Yep, definitely Wilkerson from Skynyrd. He could boogie like a mofo, and wrote some of the simplest-yet-most-fun bass lines ever.

Eric Wilson. While not technically proficient, he can really groove. What's he up to these days, still in Long Beach Dub All-Stars?

Steve DiGorgio. Metal bassists get very little respect, but this guy can really let it rip on fretless.

Overrated: No idea. I can't stand Jaco, but that's just because I hate the music. I'm not gonna doubt that he had an impact on modern playing...

Underrated: Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne (although he's getting more and more recognition, so he may not be underrated anymore).

Okay, I'll be the first to throw out some Overrated claims, and risk being shot for them.
Overrated: Fieldy from Korn (just not impressed with his writing).

Rob Trujillo, just based on his recent work with Metallica. He's a very good bass player, and I am a big fan of his, but I'm disappointed that he didn't write his own bass lines for their new album (although I'm not sure that new bass lines alone could save them). Bob Rock filled in competently, but as a full-time bass player, I think Trujillo might have been better off to contribute his own work to the album.

  4. Underrated:

Mark Hoppus(I believe his lyrics and basslines fit the style/genre very well...and I like his bass:)

Mike Dirnt(I think he's a great bass player with some very good bass lines, and really keeps the band together,but...no one really knows/cares how good he is:meh:

    Overrated:

John Turner(I'm sure if I had 19 some custom 7 string conklins I'd be just as "good") ;)

Agree: All of the under rated
Fieldy doesn't practice and laughs about it ( aggravates me)

Disagree: Cliff Burton was not over-rated at all

I'm not going to goto into Hoppus or this threat will be closed.

I would take your opinion over mine, as you are more talented and experiences with music than I am.
( I dont reveal my age because many people look down on it )

Overrated: Les Claypool, Cliff Burton, John Turner (fer cryin out loud, he can't even play Freebird!)

Underrated: Laura Love is all I can think of off the top of my head.

A lot of the ones that came to mind weren't underrated, just fairly unknown; when known though, they're generally recognized and praised just the right amount.

I'll play the hyena in the tall grass, and wait for the carnage that's due to follow. Afterwards, I'll come out and roll around in the kill. :p

Rob I must say is one great bassist. His work in Ozzy was absolutely great. My opinion is now he is sort of put to waste being in Metallica.

  15. As a funkateer I definitely feel the urge to put the spotlight on the IMO grossly under-rated Stuart Zender, the former bassist of Jamiroquai.

The man puts so much feel into his work. I haven't heard any other bassplayer from the nineties or later put so much soul into their grooves. He sure knows what the pocket is!
You can tell from his sound he really, totally loves the instrument. I dig his sound over all other bass players' sounds, so phat, so juicy.
    He made me play bass.

    EZ

  16. I agree that Claypool is a little overated, but since he is so freakin creative he can't be very overated, he can put down a funk and groove like anyone, and his writing is just down right goofy and funny sounding, but I love that. As far as underated. I think Jeff Ament comes in there, he's a great player too ya know!

    underrated:
John Myung (maybe if they'd turn him up in the mix more people would notice him :meh:) Dave Meros (spocks beard) and John Turner keep up the good work man)

    Overrated:
anyone who lacks musicianship on bass and is seen as an impressive player.
