I've got a MIM 50's Precision and have been wondering about the the weird look of my pickup for a bit. I've recently had some time to dial in my set-up, and thought I'd investigate why my plastic pickup cover looks jacked on one side. I took the covers off and realized that the pole pieces are VERY different sizes and they barely stick out on the low E/A side. What can I do? Is there a way to adjust the pole pieces? I've read that they are potentially held in with friction, but I don't want to destroy my pu.. Any advice? A picture probably explains more:
Oh, yeah, it's says a mouthful, alright.... That's really too close to the strings on that. There's a general recommendation of around a 1/2", more or less. At the distance you have there, the magnetic pull on the strings from the pole pieces have a significant effect on the string's tone and sustain. My comments are of a very general nature. There's several great guitar tech types here that can elaborate more. Also, I understand that the MIM Fenders benefit greatly from a good aftermarket pickup. I particularly like the Nord NP5Fs, but there's several out there that will give you good results and probably sound better than what you have there. I'm gathering this is a left-handed instrument (which has nothing to do with anything, just curious)? Good luck!
Ha. Correct, the pickups were extremely close. When I had taken that photo I had just put the pickups back and didn't adjust the pickups back down yet. In the last day I've been playing with the pu height to try to dial in tone.. (or see if I can tell a huge difference) and in all that extra attention to that one area, I thought I'd try to figure out why the two coils look so different. Here's another photo with the pups at the height I currently prefer. (as you can see, the plastic covers aren't really in the way, but it just looks a little silly I guess).
All you need to do is use some rigid foam or realign the existing foam under the pickup. It will push the poles flush with the top. I'm guessing the foam underneath is just a little off. You want to line it up with the poles on the bottom. If there simply isn't enough foam already there (which is a possibility), you can order pickup more strips, use weather stripping or any other rigid foam that is durable enough not to deteriorate over time.
There is nice new foam under already. Just to show the difference in pole position, I took a few additional photos..
I read that the pole pieces are only held in by friction so I just went for it and put a little finger pressure to the back of the poles and voila, moved them right into place. A couple poles required a bit more finger force.. but they're all even now. Hmm.. Good to know. It was so easy that I feel kind of dumb now..
those are the fender plastic molded bobbin pickups, so you can safely push the poles around or even push them right out of the pickup. there's a layer of plastic between the magnets and the coil wire. do not try this with regular P pickups, the wire is wound right onto the magnets and you'll kill the pickup.
Ahh, okay. I responded based on what I was looking at. That looks much better, as do the subsequent pics. And yes, does it sound better/different?
To comment on adjusting the poles - yes, you can do it on the plastic bobbin. As you raise a pole, you will get a little more articulation and a little less warmth. Another option: just flip the two segments around. The D & G can always use more warmth.
Regarding the sound; I noticed a little clarity, but it was nothing major. That's pretty interesting idea to mellow D & G though. Maybe something to experiment next time I've got some time to kill. Thanks guys!
